Unfortunately, crash testing is almost always either way behind schedule or non-existent. Such is the case with the new, second-generation Chevrolet Volt. Though offered first as a 2016 Model Year car, the new Volt hadn’t undergone the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety’s crash test until just recently…and it basically aced the test.

Scoring a Top Safety Pick+ rating, the 2017 Volt is among the safest cars available today and it even garnered a “Good” is the IIHS’ hardest test, small overlap front. This test if often the undoing for many cars, so we’ll focus on who well the Volt performed in this area.

As the IIHS explains of the Volt’s small overlap test:

The driver space was maintained well, with maximum intrusion of the lower interior of 9 cm at the lower hinge pillar. Upper interior intrusion measured 7-8 cm at the hinge pillar and instrument panel.

Injury measures
Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

Restraints and dummy kinematics
The dummy’s head contacted the frontal airbag but started to slide off the left side because the seat belt allowed excessive forward excursion of the head and torso. The side curtain airbag deployed and has sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with side structure and outside objects.

Anybody knows the reason why Tesla is avoiding IIHS crash tests for years while smaller GM cars ace it?

The IIHS buys the cars and crashes them. Your question ought to be “anybody knows the reasons why the IIHS is avoiding Teslas for years but testing smaller GM cars?”

Because Tesla will fail but is a secret, wait until we finally let the truth out with the moon fake landing and then will go after Tesla.

Engine, steering, tires are all part of the crush space, destroy hardware not people.

When you look at the overhead shot, one thing you’ll notice is that even with all of that damage, the impact actually deflects the car away from the impact object.

Excessive forward excursion? Why not just say it, the dummy, moved around a lot. I think scientific speak can be funny at times.
Good safety ratings for the Volt though.

In the first scene the camera panned to slowly to catch the impact … I don’t think that is supposed to happen when you smash $40,000 car against a wall, is ist?

Not sure if you watched the same video but that looked quite impressive to me. Structure held up admirably in a very demanding crash scenario.

Haven’t been able to find a car that doesn’t do that in the IIHS *small* overlap front test.

Major oversight.

The seat belt is clearly ineffective at correctly working with that driver side airbag.

LOL, you’re right, better buy one of those other cars that don’t do nearly as well as the Volt. Okayyyy…

Clive, your comment to someone else to “calm down” made me laugh. You go off on a mini-rant about how unsafe the Volt is when the article proves it is safer than most. We are talking about one of the safest cars in America.
And you are thinking, “major oversight” and “nasty”.

2017 Volt with ACC is the only car ever tested by IIHS to have “Good” ratings (highest possible) in all crashworthiness categories, “Good” headlights, AND a “Superior” rating for front crash prevention.

You’re so right Clive. I’ve been driving my Volt for 9 months now and I’ve been terrified every waking moment while driving worrying about my safety. After seeing this video, tomorrow I will return my Volt 2 years early so I dont have to continue driving in fear of being killed in my Volt on my commute to work.

Why do people that don’t understand physics insist on proving it in public?

This just validates 6 years of outstanding safety for Volt drivers. 6 years and there has only been one fatality in a Volt. I don’t think there are too many cars that can match that level of protection.
The one tragic fatal accident was just to the north of me. A kid in a BMW came over a hill going more than 115 mph and was only able to slow to around 75 mph before he T-boned the Volt and killed three of the people in the car, leaving the daughter injured but alive. I don’t think any car in the world could have saved that family from a BMW doing 75 mph.

This is great news.
Hopefully, it won’t take this long to get Chevrolet Bolt IIHS safety rating results.

It’s always sad to see such a beautiful car destroyed for one of these tests.. But I know why they do it. I guess it is good to know that the car I drive every day is safe.

Getting a good on the small overlap test is an achievement. Lots of cars have failed that one. The “+” comes from having auto front braking as an option.

Cool. Such a superlative PHEV yet sadly the masses flock to the inferior Prius.

I wonder how sales would change if GM had engineered the 2017 Volt to use a flat battery pack so the rear seat could handle three across?

If you watch closely at the end of the frontal view of the crash it appears that the Volt comes equipped with some sort of detachable mono-wing drone that ejects from the front grill that then flies away to send for help.
