Prepare for 55 million e-motorcycles and e-scooters

Navigant Research forecasts that in the next 10 years, 55 million electric motorcycles and scooters will be sold worldwide.

It’s a pretty big number, but according to the report – rising gasoline prices and increasingly congested city streets will turn more and more consumers to two-wheeled vehicles.

The other important thing is that 98% of all those sales, 53.9 million, will remains heavily concentrated in China, while the rest of the world must happily settle for 1.4 million, still probably several hundred times more than annual sales in 2013.

In 2023 alone, 6 million e-motorcycles and e-scooters could be sold.

John Gartner, research director with Navigant Research stated:

“Although high component costs and sluggish demand currently hamper the sales of electric two-wheel vehicles today, this market is poised for growth as consumer markets continue to expand and new high-profile competitors such as Harley Davidson enter the market. In many areas, the use of e-motorcycles and e-scooters is permitted on roads and on paths designated for bicycles and scooters, broadening their appeal for younger motorists.”

The “Electric Motorcycles and Scooters” report indicates that electric two-wheel vehicles will be still more expensive than their internal combustion engine counterparts in the near future, which is the limiting factor for sales.

“Despite these challenges, manufacturers of these vehicles are finding strategies for success, according to the report – including targeting the fleet market, which has proven to be a successful niche for e-motorcycles and e-scooters in both law enforcement and small cargo delivery. Going forward, the shifting nature of personal mobility is also expected to contribute to the increased interest in utilizing scooters and motorcycles for transportation.”

I agree that there will be a lot of e-moto built and sold over the next decades. Congestion will drive a lot of it, but energy prices will as well.

I ride a 2013 Zero S with a modified 660 amp controller. I get between 70-100 miles range on my 8.5 kWh battery. I can hit 60 mph in three seconds flat! This is hands down, the best commuter/sport bike in the world.

The power and maneuverability of these bikes is better than any internal combustion bikes. The quality of the ride is unmatched.

Bikes are being sold with 180 miles of range today. Every year, that will go up. You can fast charge them in 20 minutes.

It’s very clear the future is electric for both motorcycles and cars.

Great to see this high number for future sales. I hope the USA can take a larger roll in sales for China.
