2013 Tokyo Motor Show Opens – InsideEVs Is There With All The Pictures You Can Stand

NOV 20 2013 BY JAY COLE 11

The 2013 Tokyo Motor Show opens today. And because the Tokyo show is known for its plug-in vehicles, InsideEVs is there (or rather here).

And when we say today, that could very well mean tomorrow for our North American readers due to the future tense of Japan Standard Time.

What can we tell you?  The future is a strange, scary place – and if you ever get here, it is filled with fancy concept cars, all the high tech gizmos you can stand…and an unnaturally high ratio of attractive models to pasty middle-aged men.  At least that is the case on “press days.”

Over the next couple days there will be lots of breaking stories, vehicle reveals to report on (of cars both real and imagined), but for now (and with camera in hand), we give you a taste of the early morning action.

Sweet!

Very nice… Maybe Tesla’s booth would be more populated if Tesla had a Chademo to S converter for the japanese market ready that they said they were developing.

Tesla has announced that they will have a CHAdeMo adapter by 1Q2014, and they have released pictures of the North American version. They said they will have version for Japan and a third version for Europe.

I’m still not a fan of the Norelco Blade Runner.
Any other North American cars there besides Tesla?
Jay are you in Tokyo or one of your minions?

Just can’t understand why the tiny little “Smart mobility” cars are such the rage over seas, and the Tesla gets a “meh”?

The market is different in Asia. Physical space is at a premium and the geographical areas (countries) are smaller. Big cars are not practical to drive and find parking. Long range is not needed as much as it is in the States. Plus other countries tend to have many more options for moving around within crowded cities (subway, bus, scooter, bike, walk, etc.). So I believe the general population generally has less need to drive a big car. And the pricing of the Tesla makes it a big luxury car, priced well above standard city cars.
Also consider how the ICE world has shaped perception of big cars – heavy, inefficient, high cost of fuel, high cost of maintenance, air quality impacts. Even though the Tesla is much better in many respects, I am guessing it might also suffer from that image.

Japan is basically the size of California with the population of the whole US inside it, so, yeah, big cars are an extravagance there.

Maybe Tesla’s booth would be fuller if they had babes in mini-skirts and high heels like that first picture?

C’mon Elon, you understand the super model attraction!

Japanese automotive market is a defacto closed market.

Is there a planned announcement time from Nissan (or even better Infiniti) during this show?

It is done, was “yesterday” Nov 20th at 10:30am going by local time.
Infiniti isn’t a real thing in Japan – so nothing from them, lol.

It should be noted that some “genius” decided to have the LA Auto Show press days on the same date – and Nissan is just wrapping theirs up in LA right now…and Infiniti (where the brand actually sells) goes tomorrow at 9:45 (pacific. We (and by we I don’t mean me) will cover all points of interest of course, (=
