Wow…Simply wow!!!

2013 Nissan LEAF

2013 Nissan LEAF

Giving credit where it’s due, the staff at Best Selling Cars Blog, along with assistance from a gent by the name of Austin Rutherford, presented a comprehensive list of the Top 1,000 (actually, its a Top 937, as that’s all the vehicles that exist with sales data) best-selling vehicles worldwide in 2012.

This truly comprehensive list is so mind-boggling long that we can’t even imagine the hours or days it took to compile.

When the excruciating data crunching ended, the list emerged.  We scanned it for plug-in vehicles and, though a few of the figures don’t precisely line up with what we believe 2012 worldwide sales to be for a some vehicles, here’s a look at some notably entries found in the Top 1,000 list:

  • Chevy Volt/ Opel-Vauxhall Ampera: Sales 31,400 Units – Rank Overall: 432nd Place
  • Nissan LEAF: Sales 26,566 Units – Rank Overall: 468th Place
  • Renault Twizy: Sales 9,020 Units – Rank Overall: 626th Place
  • Mitsubishi i-MiEV: Sales 7,917 Units – Rank Overall: 645th Place
  • Tesla Model S: Sales 2,650 Units -Rank Overall: 730th Place
  • Renault Fluence: Sales 1,407 Units -Rank Overall: 779th Place*
  • Fisker Karma: Sales 1,073 Units – Rank Overall: 797th Place
  • Tesla Roadster: Sales 132 Units – Rank Overall: 881st Place
  • Renault Zoe: Sales 60 Units – Rank Overall: 902nd Place

Our eyes were burning when perusing this exhaustive list, so if we missed a vehicle or two, we apologize.  Maybe we omitted a couple on purpose.  Who knows?

Note: Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid sales were included in conventional Prius sales in this Top 1,000 list, so we didn’t break out its results here.

* not originally listed/broken down, but we added their sales and approximate position

So the PiP isn’t on the list?

    1. Jay Cole says:

Sorry no, Toyota is not keen on breaking out PiP sales it seems, so it would be really hard to get a worldwide sales figure for inside calendar year 2012. I imagine they would be in the 500-range.

What about the Ford Focus EV? Was it just combined with the regular Focus #’s? Same with the C-max Energi? Rav4? Fit EV?

  2. Emc2 says:

Your summary missed the Citroen C-Zero (3,152) and the Peugeot iOn (3,095). These rebadged cars raised i-MiEV family sales to 14,164 units for 2012 (just as you add up Volt and Amperas).

And for those wondering about the PiP, last time Toyota reported global sales (http://www2.toyota.co.jp/en/news/12/11/1108_1.html), 21,600 units have been sold worldwide by Oct/Nov 2012, making it the third best selling PEV, with the i-MiEV family ranking fourth in 2012 sales, and the Twizy in fifth place, not third as shown above.

    1. Emc2 says:

According to Bloomberg, 27,181 Prius PHVs were sold worldwide in 2012 (see http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-03-12/gm-s-chevy-volt-outsold-nissan-leaf-last-year-bnef-says.html), so, actually it was the second best selling PEV in 2012!
