2,000 Tesla Superchargers Now Operational

FEB 28 2015 BY ERIC LOVEDAY 8

The magical number of 2,000 has been achieved:

“Last week Tesla reached a milestone of 2,000 Superchargers worldwide, located at almost 400 Supercharger Stations in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.”

According to Tesla, the 2,000 number will double to 4,000 by the end of 2015.

Check out the brief Tesla blog post and nifty infographic below for more on Tesla’s Supercharger achievements.

2,000 Superchargers

Last week Tesla reached a milestone of 2,000 Superchargers worldwide, located at almost 400 Supercharger Stations in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Tesla Superchargers enable free long distance electric driving across the United States, and up and down the West and East Coasts. They connect the United Kingdom to continental Europe and stretch from the south of France to northern Norway, far up into the Arctic Circle. In China, Superchargers link major cities along the coast, and we recently opened Supercharger stations in Japan and Australia. The Tesla Supercharger network is the world’s largest and fastest-growing fast-charging network. In 2014, the number of Superchargers increased five fold. We plan to double the number in 2015.

Model S drivers enjoy the convenience of plugging in at home or at the office so they’ve always got plenty of charge for their daily driving needs. Tesla’s global Supercharger network makes road trips exceptionally easy and delightful. At Superchargers, Model S owners traveling far from home can get half a charge in as little as 20 minutes – completely free. Superchargers are typically located next to amenities such as cafes and shopping centers so you can stop for a quick meal or shopping break while your Model S charges. Every Model S with an 85 kWh battery includes Supercharging, and it can be added to any 60 kWh Model S.

I think more remarkable than being the world’s largest fast charging network is the fact that it is also so heavily utilized. While you have so many stories about level 2 charging stations going unused, with the Superchargers you hear far more stories about having to wait to get a charge (which I experienced last weekend while borrowing a Model S).

Where did you have to wait to get a charge?

Oh how I would love to get a direct line to real time Tesla supercharging stats. How much certain stations are used and where and when there are waiting times are high upon my list of “useless information” that I would like to know.

This was in Aurora, IL where apparently Tesla owners like to have Sunday lunch at Two Brothers Brewery.

This is why there should be a 30 min max on charging at all charge stations.

Congrats to a great accomplishment in spreading Fast Charging Infrastructure around the globe.

Wondering when we’ll see a similar system built on Mars…

The more Superchargers the merrier… which is why I’m disappointed that the roll out has slowed down so much here in the US.

Way to go Tesla!

Now that the Tesla CHAdeMO adapter is shipping out to early requestors, I wonder if anyone will find the smarts to make an adapter that can be used at a Supercharger to quick charge a CHAdeMO capable vehicle (Leaf, iMiEV, Soul EV, and coming Mitsubishi PHEV)?

Seems like something ABB could work out with Tesla, or other CHAdeMO charging station makers could involve themselves with as well!

Having an adapter that could talk to the car and to the Supercharger so as to control its power delivery, would make the ‘adoption of Electric Vehicles’ an even more interesting space!

LEAF – meet Model S, Model S – meet LEAF! (At Supercharger stations) Etc.
