The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is quickly becoming one of the most successful plug-in vehicles both in Japan and in Europe.

Recently, Mitsubishi announced crossing a level of 10,000 delivered Outlander PHEVs in the Netherlands! Most of them (8,009) were sold in Fall of 2013.  Another 2,000 were added in the first quarter of this year.

Outlander PHEV #10,000 was sold by Autobedrijf Oudshoorn in Leiderdorp.

We had better prepare for several strong months ahead because the total number of orders for the Outlander PHEV from the Netherlands is now closing in on 14,000 (including 10,000 delivered).

In Europe, Mitsubishi already sold ~19,100 Outlander PHEVs, so over half have gone to the Netherlands.

Together, with 12,536 sales in Japan, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV sales stands at 31,636 (maybe even a thousand or two more because March data for Japan is still unknown at this time).

Hopefully, this high sales volume will continue when the Outlander PHEV arrives next year in the US.

Impressive. Wondering how much production constraints have a negative effect on those pretty good sale numbers.

That is amazing. 10K of a PHEV sold to one tiny little country? That incentive program sure got people hooked.

I still think a PHEV SUV will also be a big seller in the USA. It could be the break-through plug-in vehicle for the USA. The vehicle that get Americans to understand the joy of driving on cheap domestic electricity.

It could well be, but at the same time, light truck hybrid sales have been abysmal, at least in the US:

All the carmakers are afraid of a sales disaster with a PHEV SUV. If people aren’t buying regular hybrids, what’s the chance they’ll buy more expensive plugin hybrids?

At this rate Outlander will be a real competitor to Leaf in global sales.

Jesus… Mitsu should honestly, seriously, really try to push for a November release down here in the US. I mean, c’mon, at least bring in a few… even if people have to put in orders and wait a couple months for delivery, but start showing the damn car in dealerships THIS YEAR!

Please put the third row in for sales in the states

…and put increase battery size from 12KWh to 16KWh for extra taxcredit of $400/KWh. That should put the extra cost effectively at zero and give the car more coveted AER.

“when the Outlander PHEV arrives next year in the US.”

And Mitsu also recently said they hope to break even this year in the USA and they have lost money every year since 2007. And there are currently no i-MiEV’s for sale?

They could be number 1 if they cared to be.

    1. Rob Stark says:

      Mitsu only sold 588 i-MIEVs in 2012.

Mitsu spent 2013 selling leftover 2012 models.

Volt reducing price $5k and LEAF reducing price $6400 really hurt i-MIEV.

2014 i-MIEV should be back soon.

  7. Kimmi says:

The Outlander PHEV was the best selling plug-in last November and December, i wouldn’t be surprised if it did that again during 2014.

Im in amsterdam right now and can confirm that most vehicles charging on the street are mitsus 🙂 nice looking vehicles!
