Volkswagen Golf GTE Production – Video

3 years ago by Electric CarsTV 3

Witness the first batch of plug-in hybrid Volkswagen Golf GTE’s as they roll down and off the assembly.

The Golf GTE is VW’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid.  Volkswagen’s first PHEV, the XL1, is a limited-production model sold in select markets with a high price tag.

Currently, Volkswagen says it has no plans to offer the Golf GTE in the U.S., but some spy shots of a station wagon Golf GTE suggest otherwise.

Basic Golf GTE Specs/Details:

The sporty PHEV Golf GTE (GT Electric) features a 148 hp 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a 107 hp electric motor.

  • 0 to 60 mph: 7.6 seconds
  • Electric-only range: 31 miles (NEDC – about 20 miles on the US EPA)
  • 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery
  • Top speed in electric mode: 81 mph
  • Top speed: 135 mph
  • Total range: 600 miles
  • Recharging time of 2 hours 240-volt 16-amp

I hate to say it, but those hybrid ICE engines look incredibly complex, laborious and heavy. Nothing to get excited about. While watching, I was imagining this as a Tesla video. It would look more like an agile rugby team manovering the compact 416 horse power Model S motor into place.

In fact, here Tesla’s robot rugby team can be seen in action, but the electric motor is so inconsequential it is not even highlighted in this video:
