Audi R8 e-tron (or e sport) Makes Its Production Debut In Paris Next Weekend

The Audi R8 e-tron will officially be making its production debut at the Paris Motor Show on the 29th of this month.  However, as luck would have it, Audi previewed a f12 e-performance vehicle ahead of that event to get us excited – and someone was there to take this nice walkthrough video.

Audi R8 e-tron basics are expected to be:

  • two electric motors
  • 308 horsepower
  • 604 lb-ft of torque
  • 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds
  •  42/58 weight distribution
  • 7.7-inch ‘Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode’ replaces standard rear-view mirror (earlier post)
  • top speed: 125 mph
  • it can do a lap of the Nürburgring circuit in 8:09.099 (earlier post/video)
  • electric range: 135 miles (besting Mercedes SLS E-Cell by about 30 miles)
Lithium Battery Pack Gives The Audi 135 Miles Of Estimated Range

The video is quite professional, giving us decent looks at both the inside and outside of the car, including the engine bay and the interior with its large touch screen/info-tainment display.  It also appears the electric supercar is now referred to as the “e sport”.

For the Paris Motor Show, Audi has set up a interactive user display for people to ‘test drive’ the dash ergonomics without being in the car, as well as put the electric motor and lithium ion battery pack on display.

“Hi, Audi Service? Yes, My Motorized Charge Port Hatch Isn’t Working Again”

If we have any issue with the car if it was in production after seeing the video, it is that the front charge port.

While being cleverly hidden in the front of the car, it looks (and sounds) as if it is a repeating repair claim just waiting to happen.

Audi says they will build 1,000 R8 e-trons, and the car goes on sale in early 2013 with an expected price of about $250,000.

Update (October 16th, 2012):  Video originally was thought to be of Audi’s production e-tron, but is actually Audi’s e-performance research project, specifically the Audi f12 e-performance vehicle

Wow – an iPad as part of the console? Looks cheep and not very user friendly. I must say I was in the Model S and the execution of the screen, touch controls, and console area much better in the Tesla. I have to say that I’m not as impressed with the e-tron as I thought I would be.

    Quarter of a million bucks?!

That or two Tesla Model S Performance sedans…
Or one Model S and one Fisker Karma…
Or one Model S, one VIA Trux, and one Volt…
Or one Model S, one Volt, one Focus EV and one Leaf…
OK, maybe not the Leaf, MiEV, Coda or Th!nk City instead :p

I have to say all this engineering and research from Germany certainly makes

the Tesla Model S and Roadster look good. Oh, yes, and I can put in my order

for a Model S today and drive twice as far for half as much.

Indeed – all this effort from Audi certainly makes the Tesla look like a miracle

car – and one you can actually buy and own – NOW.
