Video: Smart Pitches Fortwo Electric Drive as Our Friend Ed; The “Smooth Operator” With a Single-Speed Transmission

4 years ago by Electric CarsTV 3

Meet Ed.

Hi...My Name is Ed.

Hi…My Name is Ed.

Ed is a “smooth operator,” says Smart.

Ed is the buddy of Tyler.

Sometimes Ed gets cranky, especially when he doesn’t get fed charged.

Why’s Ed so smooth?  Because gone is that lurchy automated-manual trans found in Ed’s gas-fueled siblings.  In it’s place is one smooth operator: a single-speed gearbox.

As Smart says:

“The all-new smart electric drive has a surprise underneath. Its single gear transmission means instant torque and smooth acceleration. Experience all the benefits of the energy efficient, fully customizable, and just plain fun, smart electric drive.”

The Smart Fortwo Electric Drive is now available in select US states and it’s the cheapest electric around.

For full details on it pricing structure (battery rental plan included), availability, sales expectations and more, check out our exclusive interview with Smart USA general manager Mark Webster.

Having owned a smart fortwo CDI (euro- turbo diesel) “back in the day,” I can personally appreciate the words “smooth transmission” as being a big selling feature when attempting to lure back past fortwo owners
