With the launch of the third-generation Smart Fortwo Electric Drive in the US now successfully underway, we thought potential buyers (or lessees) out there would want to know what to expect of Smart’s first mass-produced and soon-to-be available nationwide electric vehicle.

This is not one of those so-called compliance vehicles (read our interview with Smart USA boss Mark Webster for proof of that).

What it is though is the cheapest electric vehicle available in the US, the only one offered in convertible version (cabriolet as Smart calls it) and the US’ only EV offered in a way that you can lease the battery pack separately of the vehicle.

There’s a lot of uniqueness here, that’s for sure.  But if it’s not a joy to drive, then why should we care?

Yes, it is the cheapest EV in the States and that’s a bonus, but if cheap equates to bad, then we certainly wouldn’t be interested in owning one.  However, here cheap only relates to its price tag, as the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive can hold its own against any other EV in its segment.

    I would rather buy another i-MiEV. At least it has room for 4 full-sized adults, and with the rear seats folded, a lot of cargo capacity. Price and range are comparable too.

    Can’t beat the price. I figure at current interest they should eventually offer a $150 lease nationwide. That would completely lock me in, EXCEPT that from what I hear it only has a 3kW charger, not 6. A 6kW charger on that little battery would give you 80% in 2 hours, almost within the ballpark of a DC charger. Speaking of DC, does it even have a DC port at all? That would be another huge strike against this tiny but incredibly affordable car.

      Hummm, I wonder about anything more than a 3000 or 3300 watt charger on such a dinky battery….I know they always claim you can charge these things at 22 kw in europe but I’d wonder about battery life at at such a Multiple “C” rate.
