Light?  Yes.

Resistant to dents?  Check.

Easy to paint?  Yep.

Customizable paint choices?  Why not.

Those are just a few of the benefits of the BMW i3’s thermoplastic exterior shell.  Unlike steel, the thermoplastic is produced in a highly sustainable way, says BMW.

But we’re most intrigued by the promise of a rust-free exterior and custom color combinations.  Not sure is meant by custom colors?  Check out the video and you’ll soon find out.

    Wow brilliant. A main complaint I hear about composite body is the large amount of energy req’d to manufacture it. However we must subtract the amount of energy saved in painting.

    If you are a BMW motorcycle fan you know that the Germans can come up with some pretty whacky paint jobs. This new painting process is probably got the paint designers going wild.

      Agreed. This video was great. I had no idea volume vehicles were being made with TP in such an automated fashion.
