2012 Vauxhall Ampera

Vauxhall has bequeathed the name ‘Earth‘ to its entry level Ampera that is just now hitting showrooms in the UK.

The ‘Earth’s base price starts at £29,995 after allowing for the £5,000 Plug-In Car Grant (which is similar to the US $7,500 rebate scheme).  This new price represents a discount of £2,500 over the previously stated base MSRP of £32,250.  In the UK, and free from the EPA, General Motors advertises the Volt’s cousin as having 25-50 miles of all electric range, with 360 total miles of high efficiency driving.

“The Ampera is currently offered through a network of 24 retailers.  Offering a personalized level of customer care, each retailer has four specialists, two in sales and two in aftersales.  Through Vauxhall’s partnership with British Gas customers also benefit from free home assessment regarding their home charging circumstances.” – Vauxhall Media

However, in the UK they have Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) which can be down right Draconian when it comes to advertising claims. In 2010 the ASA ruled against Renault UK and banned their advertising regarding “zero-emissions vehicles” because the ads, according to the ASA, breached Broadcast TV Code rules 5.1.1, 5.1.2 (Misleading advertising) and 5.2.1 (Misleading advertising- Evidence) and 5.2.6 (Misleading advertising-Environmental claims.)

The ASA said, “Greenhouse gasses and other pollutant emissions are generated by vehicle manufacturing processes. The emissions from manufacture are many factors larger than the emissions from tailpipes, even in gasoline engine vehicles. Most reports on ZEV’s impact to the climate do not take into account these manufacturing emissions.”

Well no, you would’nt, in the UK they have a ‘steering wheel’, and for the UK it is on the right side. The USA may well use ‘Sterring wheels’ and I’m sure you will find them in the appropriate location 😉
