Via Ars Technica, we learn that we should get some new info on the upcoming Tesla Model Y sometime later this week.

Ars Technica reached out to Tesla CEO Elon Musk via a direct message on Twitter. The news site explains it like this:

We asked Musk (via Twitter direct message) whether there was any truth to recent rumors of the fourth model. The reply? An enigmatic “Next week.”

Well, that was late last week, so we expect the info to come any day now.

Update:  Ars TEchnica apparently got their information wrong, and offered this update.

“Ars followed up with Musk through Twitter for clarification. Musk said “next week” actually refers to incoming information about Neuralink, his recently revealed company aiming to link humans and computers. Information on the “Model Y” is not expected until 2018.”

Musk has confirmed that the electric Y crossover will come in a “few years” and that it will ride on the same basic platform as the Model 3, but beyond that little information is known at this time.

We’re hopeful that the Y will have a starting price of $40,000 or so and will offers at least 200 miles or range, but none of these details are available to us yet. If priced right, the Model Y could capture a huge chunk of the crossover market.

We had not expected any more info on the Model Y until at least year’s end, but hopefully some of this vital info will now come out in the next few days. Maybe orders will open up sooner rather than later too.

Give me seating for 5, 200 miles of range, and AWD for around $40k and I’ll buy two.

    In black.

  2. Would love to order one if it is basically an EV version of my Subaru Forester, plus a few additional tweaks 🙂

I expect this model to do better in Canada and Europe then the 3, especially with no AWD 3s coming out right away. Seems almost possible we will get a Y in Canada less than a year after an AWD 3!

    1. Boris says:

Y has no chance in Europe if Elon wants to stick with the falcon doors. Everyone goes skiing and everyone wants to have their Thule box on the roof period, but I guess China and California are more important, so let’s see what happens this week…

      1. turboro says:

Y based on 3 will Never ever get falcon doors, we shall be happy it get a normal 5th door and not a trunk lid as on the first shown Model 3

          1. turboro says:

Thanks Boris, was not aware of that statement! But apparently those doors are expensive and complex, I can imagine he has overtought it to keep it as Model X feature and avoid on Y to make affordable and bring faster to market.

          2. I agree with your sentiment on the doors. They would never sell here in the mountains of BC either. That’s why I strenuously objected to them in my blog post “wish list”.

I do suspect the car won’t have them though, just because we know they will need to hit a cost point and first principals suggest a fancy articulating door with a bunch of motors will be heavier and more expensive then a regular door. So despite him saying that, I would be surprised to see falcon doors on the Y.

Now having said that, he may need to hear from us potential buyers loud and clear that we don’t want them!!

          3. wavelet says:

That tweet’s pretty old (and was deleted fairly soon after being posted). Musk’s on record that he’s sorry the X got those doors, so it’s highly unlikely the Y will.

        1. MTN Ranger says:

Yes, falcon wing doors are pointless on a two row compact CUV like the Model Y. That and the mission of simplified production makes them look unlikely.

  3. theflew says:

There is zero reasons for Tesla to announce anything remotely related about the Model Y right now. There hands are full with the Model 3. All information about the Model Y will do at this point is possible cause them to lose sales on the Model 3 and at the least distraction in the media.

    1. turboro says:

Maybe they want by purpose to distract some sales on Y, to get some pressure of 3 and push stock even higher, I think it will not be more than a statement when the Y officially will be announced, like with the 3.

  4. ffbj says:

It did crash through it’s all time high today.
TSLA did. Y? Who can say. A lot of interest in buying their stock.

  5. VazzedUp says:

Turn the Model 3 into a Tesla Crosstrek XV and I’ll be taking out a loan.

  6. Model x owner says:

I’m confused or someone else is… Their “4th model” is the model 3 not the y.
    1) roadster
    2) S
    3) X
    4) 3

So if they were asking Elon about the 4th model Elon probably thought they were asking about the 3? What did the tweet actually say?

    1. (⌐■_■) Trollnonymous says:

So would the “R” in Roadster mean ‘Rough’ in the acronyms?

      hehehehehehe….. 😛

  7. Counter-Strike Cat says:

    FAKE NEWS.

Ars has already repelled their article.

Update: Ars followed up with Musk through Twitter for clarification. Musk said “next week” actually refers to incoming information about Neuralink, his recently revealed company aiming to link humans and computers. Information on the “Model Y” is not expected until 2018.

    1. Jay Cole says:

Thanks for pointing that out CCS, we will add the update to the story….which is kind of a bummer to go back to old expectations, lol.

  8. (⌐■_■) Trollnonymous says:

    Meh, no thanks.

Let me know when a crew cab truck or a Ford ranger size truck is mentioned……

  9. Anon says:

Maybe a single “Falcon Wing” for the rear hatch on the Y?
