The SRI-EV1 became the first off-road racing electric vehicle with any pedigree under its belt when it entered the challenging NORRA Mexican 1000 off-road race on April 28th of this year.

The electric off-roader is owned by the Strategic Recovery Institute and was built by Strategic Racing Designs and EV West.

The two-ton monster is equipped with twin DC motors that together produce 400 kW ( 536 hp) and over 1000 Nm (738 pound-feet) of torque.

Unfortunately, the EV1 was alone in the “EEV class” and did not finish the event, but they almost made it and that alone says something about the durability of electric vehicles when you consider that countless gas-guzzling machines fail to finish the race, too.

The good news is that, given the sequence of withdrawals of the teams from the rally, the EV1 actually took home 25th place.
