Renault Samsung Motors Begins Production Of SM3 Z.E. (w/video)
Renault Samsung Motors, which operates under the control of Renault, has started series production of the SM3 Z.E. electric at its Busan plant in South Korea.
The SM3 Z.E. is based on the gasoline SM3, that itself is based on the Renault Fluence.
According to media reports, Renault Samsung Motors plans to produce up to 4,000 of the SM3 Z.E. vehicles annually.
The question is how Renault Samsung Motors thinks it will sell so many electrics in Korea, especially if we take into consideration the Renault Fluence Z.E. sales flop in Europe, where after two years the French automaker delivered just a few thousand units and now sales have almost disappeared.
The optimistic range rating of the SM3 Z.E. is 182 km (113 miles) and the top speed is 135 kph (84 mph).
Media reports are saying that SM3 Z.E. has some type of fast charging option that the Renault Fluence Z.E. doesn’t have, but the attached video does not disclose what kind of fast charging in 30 minutes it could possibly be.
We think the SM3 Z.E. has the same 1-phase J1772 charging inlet on the right side like the original Fluence Z.E. and probably the same type inlet is on the left side, but who knows?
The price of the SM3 Z.E. is approximately 45 million won ($42,255 US), but with local governments grants it could cost buyers less then half of this price.
