Cadillac ELR Coming in Late 2013, On Display August 18th, 2013

The good news today was that General Motors will debut the production Cadillac ELR at the Pebble Beach Concours.  The bad news is that the event starts Sunday, August 19th, 2012, and GM was not talking about this year.

Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance – 2011 Style

Checking the Concours d’Elegance website, we find that next year’s event happens on August the 18th, 2013, so you have plenty of time to plan your day trip to Pebble Beach to check out GM’s latest and greatest Voltec platform.

The Chevrolet Volt’s Hamtramck Assembly line is expected to undergo a changeover in June of 2013, to start production of generation 1.5 of the Volt for the fall, and to start producing the 2014 Cadillac ELR shortly thereafter.

Other random factoid of interest:  It was this day last year that GM announced the Cadillac Converj concept would go into production of the ELR, while promoting amongst other things, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Lots of questions to be answered:

Will the 2014 Volt and 2014 ELR share the same ICE?? My guess is no. The ELR will have a turbo but the 2014 Volt will not. The best we will see in 2014 Volt will be an Atkinson cycle which is really all you need unless your talking high dollar sports car.

    and what about battery packs??

Will the 2014 Volt have the same kwh rating as the ELR??? Again I would expect not. More bucks for the ELR MIGHT buy more kwh. or maybe your ELR dollars will get you the SAME kwh only with a more advanced chemistry that results in a lower wt pack (I think I vote for this option)

    and what about the Motors??

ELR will definitely have bigger traction motor….not sure about the Volt.

and lastly…what about the planetary gearset?????

What will GM do to beef up the planetary gearset to handle the higher power ELR????
Change materials or physically scale up the whole 4ET50 transmission??

Only your hairdresser knows for sure.

My choice would be use the same drivetrain and battery, but build the Caddy out of lighter weight materials, carbon fiber, aluminum, ect. Less weight means more performance and range. I really love this car and am so glad to see GM build a 2 door EV again, maybe this time they mean it!

Why is the term ‘bad news’ used just because GM isn’t introducing a 2014 car in 2012? GM just can’t seem to do right with whatever they decide, it seems with some of the writers here.
