When burdened with a staggering base price of $845,000, selling in volume can prove to be rather difficult.

That seems to be the case with the radical Porsche 918 Spyder, which we’d been led to believe was sold out.

Porsche now says the plug-in 918 is still available for purchase, but you’d better have a deep pocketbook to buy this plug-in machine.

Set to launch this September, the 918 Spyder  will be a limited production vehicle.  Porsche says only 918 will ever be built.  The German automaker didn’t disclose how many units it sold, but does say it’s seeking additional buyers.

Interested?  Here’s the rundown on what the 918 Spyder has to offer:

Engine 4.6-Liter V-8 W/ Two Electric Parallel Motors
Total Horsepower 795 Horsepower
Total Torque 575 Pound-Feet
Transmission 7-Speed PDK Automated Manual
Fuel Economy 78 mpg
CO2 Emissions 70 g/km
Top Speed (Hybrid/Electric) 202 mph / 93 mph
Acceleration (0-62 mph/0-124 mph/0-186 mph) 3 Seconds / 9 Seconds / 27 Seconds
Battery Lithium-Ion W. 6.8 kWh Capacity, 200 kW

Perhaps you’re thinking that the 918 is similar to the plug-in McLaren P1.  Porsche says that’s not the case

“The Porsche 918 is so different.  A car with more technology on than the 918 you cannot buy. At present, nobody outside our R&D group has experienced a supersports car with more electric power. It drives fast in electric mode, has good range and you can use the electric system to boost the car. This is something unique, and really quite special.”

In the US, the Porsche 918 Spyder has a base MSRP of $845,000.  Options will easily push that past the $1,000,000 mark.
