According to 4WheelsNews, German automaker Porsche reportedly filed a patent application and submitted a sketch for a Porsche 911 plug-in hybrid.

Official details are non-existent at this time, but we suspect that the 911 PHEV will utilize technology similar (though the gas engine will likely be different) to what’s found in the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid.

Basic Panamera S E-Hybrid specs include:

  • 95 hp electric motor
  • Electricity is stored in a 9.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack
  • Top speed in electric-only mode is 84 mph
  • Top speed 167 mph with the gas engine cranking
  • Panamera S E-hybrid accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds

Of course, the 911 is lighter than the Panamera and, as such, would outperform the sedan even if equipped with an identical system.

Other reports suggest that perhaps Porsche will fit the 911 PHEV with tech borrowed from the radical Porsche 918 Spyder.  The Porsche 918 Spyder specs include:

  • 0 to 62 MPH in 2.5 seconds
  • 0 to 124 MPH in 7.2 seconds
  • 0 to 62 MPH in Electric-Only Mode 6.2 seconds or 6.1 With the Upgraded Weissach Package
  • 0 to 186 MPH in 19.9 seconds
  • 4.6-Liter V8 Puts Out 599 HP
  • Total Power From Engine and 2 Electric Motors is 875 HP at 8,500 RPM

Whatever the route Porsche takes, look for a 911 plug-in hybrid to launch in 2017.  By that time, nearly every model (Panamera, Cayenne, Cayenne Coupe and 911) in Porsche’s lineup will be offered with an optional PHEV system.

    GM had to figure out how to make a $39k Volt cheaper. Porsche has to figure out how to make an $850k 918 cheaper. I can already hear the whining, if they put weight in the middle. It’ll look like a 911. It’ll pass all the other 911s, and the Porsche Club will hate it. Getting a bad vibe, already.

      with regard to the assertion that Porsche has to figure out how to make the 918 “cheaper”: are you kidding??? the kind of people who can afford to shell out $850 grand for a car are not price sensitive. you don’t spend that kind of money on a car if you are looking for value.

        Exactly. The Three 918 orders we have taken average $1.21 mil. a car (pre-tax)

    Not sure I understand your post P.J. but your right that the redistribution of weight in a 911 would really improve an already great car. It seems that some Marques are seeing more clearly and acting, and acting now. I just hope that GM really gets it and will stay ahead with Voltec and give us what we need and want, and do it soon. Please, get that wagon out (stop it the the idiot CUV moniker) w/ rear seat leg room and space for a German Shephard Dog in the back, give us a truck, full and Colorado sized, and finally, give us a Solstice/Sky type sports coupe, and whether they Voltec the Vette or do it up with a separate nameplate or Division, beat Porsche to the punch. Give us our domestic EREV super sports car. They will all sell, some at premium prices. I have confidence in the R&D and the execution abilities at GM. To co op Nike’s tag line, “Just Do It!”

      “EREV super sports”, I like the idea and how much more could an extra ~10kwh cost?

      The 911 has always been a rear heavy car. A battery would almost require more of a mid-engine type of weight distribution. This isn’t a fix, if you prefer the challenge, and the fun, of provoking its tail.

    Porsche should finish electrifying their entire lineup and do away with the non-PHEV versions.

    Make that all car makers should electrify all models and do away with the non-PHEV or BEV models.

    Even of I had a ridiculous amount of money though – I would still have an easy decision choosing a Tesla over any of the Porsche’s.

    Will this vehicle make a significant, direct impact on the Big Issues, like reducing our carbon emissions and oil consumption? Not a chance — it will sell far too few copies for that to happen.

    But it’s still a very welcome development, if only because it ads a sheen of sex appeal to “cars with plugs” that not even a Tesla can deliver. As I keep saying over and over, the primary hurdle to much broader adoption of EVs and PHEVs is not economic or technological, it’s psychological and educational. We’re still trying to undo a lot of the misconceptions people have about electrified transportation, and a Porsche PHEV will definitely help move that process along.

    Now if we can only get Toyota and Honda to join the party (and no, the PiP does not count), then we’d really have something.
