Plug-In Sales in U.S. (EDTA data)

Trying to take advantage of the Electric Drive Transportation Association data on sales of electric cars, we prepared graphs illustrating sales broken down by type – plug-in hybrids (PHEVs and EREVs to be accurate) and all-electric cars (or maybe we should say those with or without ICE on-board).

Both types are growing, but as it turns out sales of EVs and PHEVs stabilized around a 50/50 split this year.

All PHEVs/EREVs are slightly ahead of BEVs this year (51.5%), but in August BEVs were at 52%.

Ha. We leased our 2012 Leaf on one of the lowest BEV-ratio months (Aug. 2012) – which was also the last month with <1000 BEV sales.

Would be interesting to see what the avg kWh per plug-in is.

Take each car, multiply qty sold by its kWh, then divide by the total cars.

I don’t want to do the calculations. But my guess would be somewhere around 20-22 kWH on average for the US in 2014.

  3. Based on totals sales percents from

    ~23.5 kWh

    Volt: 28%17kWh
    LEAF: 25% 24kWh
    PiP: 15% 4.4kWh
    Model S: 12% 85kWh
    Ford (c-max, Energi): 12% 7.6kWh
    Ford FocusEV: 2% 24kWh
    RAV4: 1% 42kWh
    SmartED: 1% 16.7kWh
    iMiEV: 1% 16kWh

Note that the Volt does almost as well as th Leaf. But never range anxiety.
Also it will save more gasoline since a rental gas car would get worst mileage.

Where are they putting BMW i3 or do they know the exact breakup ?

I’ve been putting i3 as a PHEV and that has skewed the numbers in PHEV favor.

There, fixed that for you. It is an and scenario or at least that is how we should be looking at and presenting it IMO.

And there are more BEV models than PHEV/EREV models. So more choices for people in terms of BEV although limited to few compliance states.

But more choices bring more sales…
