Over 51,000 plug-in electric cars were sold worldwide in October, which is about 80% more than one year ago, according to EV Sales Blog.

The bad news for the U.S. is that market share is decreasing, due to significant growth in Europe and tremendous growth in China.

EV Sales Blog notes 385,000 sales this year and expects to see the 500,000-unit mark hit for 2015 overall.

So far this year, Nissan LEAF iss #1, but Tesla Model S is very close. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is ahead of BYD Qin, but BYD is now the best-selling plug-in electric car brand globally

Tiny Kandi Panda EV, thanks to 4,581 sales in China, was the top overall model in October and barely missed the Top 10 for the year by just 155 units.

  1. Three Electrics says:

So, roughly, one out of every 144 cars sold in 2015 will be a plugin. That’s actually not too shabby.

    1. Tim E says:

I won’t be satisfied until these numbers are flip flopped – 1 out of 144 cars is gas powered – the remainder are electric. Then I will be happy!

By that time you will probably be a former

Don’t hold your breath until then…

    2. Three Electrics says:

In comparison, compressed natural gas cars are selling at about 4x the rate of plug-ins, but that technology has been around for a long time, and mainly goes to fleets.

PITIFUL SALES NUMBERS…WE MUST DO BETTER

  3. Benz says:

We will see higher sales figures in 2016.

  4. Bob says:

Sales figures will rise in 2016, but only explode if when a compacts goes > 150 miles, that will be in 2017. We should hope that interests don’t wait for more range, don’t tell your friends about insideevs :-). Every rumor about more range is bad for market. You can wait this whole life.

  5. Terry says:

Low gas prices are stopping a lot of EV sales. If gas price was what it was in 2012 EV sales would be a lot more. I think China will in the near future will sell more EVs. China definitely sees the pollution problem they have and agree that gas guzzlers create the most pollution. All gas cars are gas guzzlers that pollute

  6. dRanger says:

EV sales are pitiful because the #1 best-selling semi-affordable vehicle is modeled after a frog. Things will change only when manufacturers produce attractive and affordable vehicles. The second problem will be finding dealers willing to sell them. Hopefully, the Model 3 will demonstrate what’s possible.
