Nichicon’s EV Power Station Now With “Vehicle to Socket”

This month, Nichicon expanded its lineup of EV chargers with this new “Vehicle to Socket” model of its EV Power Station.

The new device, like the standard EV Power Station, can charge or discharge a Nissan LEAF via its V2H (vehicle to home) interface at up to 6 kW using a CHAdeMO inlet. In addition to that, the new version gets a simple waterproof socket that allows power to be supplied to external sources from an EV. So now, not only can stationary objects (i.e. a house) be powered but also portable equipment (perhaps outdoor equipment used during power outages).

According to Nichicon, this new charger adds value to EVs by allowing their high-capacity storage batteries to be used as emergency power sources.

Nichicon Expands Lineup with “Vehicle to Socket,” World’s First Double-Speed EV Charger with Power Supply Socket

Nichicon Corporation has expanded its lineup of EV chargers with the development and release of the “Vehicle to Socket” model of the EV Power Station, the world’s first* double-speed EV charger with a waterproof socket that allows power to be supplied from an EV. This product gives new value to EVs by allowing their high-capacity storage batteries to be used as emergency power sources.

Background to Development

With increasing worldwide focus on global warming and the growing concern of people everywhere about environmental problems, governments and the private sector around the world are striving to achieve a low-carbon society. In August 2012, Nichicon released the world’s first V2H (vehicle to home) EV Power Station and received a very warm market reception. Now, the EV Power Station Vehicle to Socket has waterproof sockets on the main unit that make direct power supplying possible.
Since the product allows commercial customers to use EVs as a portable power source,it can be part of a company’s BCP (business continuity plan) measures. Additionally, by installing this product at multiple bases and making use of its double-speed charging function, commercial customers can expand the range that their EVs can travel.
The EV Power Station Vehicle to Socket can supply directly from the waterproof socket on the main unit, allowing easy and fast power supplying in case of emergencies. It is also an economical alternative to quick chargers thanks to its low cost and easy installation.
Not only will this product help regional public institutions, corporations with multiple bases, small- and medium-size companies, and independent companies expand their EV fleets; it will also contribute to the proliferation of increasingly popular apartment and car sharing initiatives.

Features

  • Ability to use an EV as an emergency power source makes EV Power Station Vehicle to Socket an effective part of a company’s BCP (business continuity plan).
  • Charges up to twice as fast as a conventional 200-V household power source.
  • Much more economical to introduce compared to conventional quick chargers.
  • Range of options expands possibilities for installation.
  • Contributes to peak-time shifts with a timer function that allows charging of the EV with less-expensive nighttime electricity.
  • Covered by subsidies offered by the Next Generation Vehicle Promotion Center’s Next-Generation Automobile Infrastructure Promotion Project.
