Thinking about getting a BMW i3? Do you like to own low-volume special edition cars? When it comes to cars, a special edition where only 50 copies are made guarantees the owner will be in pretty exclusive company.

That’s exactly what BMW is doing with a special version of the 2016 i3. BMW is calling it the “i3 Shadow Sport” and they are using social media for the public unveiling. Today (Monday, 11/16) at 8:00pm EST, you can tune into the live BMWUSA Periscope event to find out the details on the i3 Shadow Sport.

Editor’ Note/Spoiler: Or you can just scroll down to shots obtained by InsideEVs to see it now

*UPDATE: We now have details on the Shadow Sport edition via email sent out to some i3 owners, including InsideEVs contributor Chris Neff:

*Editor’s Note: This post also appears on Tom’s blog. Check it out here.

From the teaser picture it looks like the car has a moonroof, which has yet to be available in the US, and is the new color, Fluid Black. It has the 19″ Cyclone wheels which only come with the top-of-the-line Tera World package, so it’s likely loaded with all the options the car offers. So far, all BMW has said was “With only 50 available to purchase, the all-electric 2016 BMW i3 Shadow Sport is every bit a BMW i3 with new features – available for the first time in the US.”

Nothing else is known about this special edition i3, so if you’re interested in the i3, and like owning rare cars, made sure you tune into tomorrow’s live Periscope event.

UPDATE 2: Thanks to another friend of InsideEVs (who would prefer to remain nameless at this point), we can give you all the details/photos ahead tomorrow’s event.

  1. Martin says:

Curious if this is already with the longer range that they’re planning to offer early 2016 to everyone.

  2. Aaron says:

As with all limited editions, they will be sold out instantaneously, while being placed on eBay at a tremendous markup. 😉

  3. R.S says:

It would be nice if they would not just limit themselves to cosmetic upgrades. I would say a higher range is not very likely, but would be nice. A far easier choice, would be a more powerful motor. If they tweak it a bit, and they might be able to increase torque and power by, lets say, 20%. This could become an option for all i3s, more performance, same range sounds like a nice package.

    1. GasKilla says:

If they increase the power you’d want to have increased battery size too. But I understand once the gas engine kicks on after the battery is drained the car has a hard time maintaining highway speed, so they need to solve this problem too especially on a “limited edition version”. Unless of course this version is BEV only.

      1. 3laine says:

The i3 has no problem maintaining highway speeds running on REx, unless you want to go 80+ or you’re going up a consistent slope. The REx’s limitations are exaggerated.

      2. R.S says:

You don’t have to, necessarily, increase the Battery size.
It depends on how much power the current battery is able to deliver. Im not sure if BMW maxed it out. But even if the pack power limits the i3s output to 170 hp, more torque would still increase acceleration, to a certain speed.

    2. 3laine says:

Because of the wording “options never before available IN THE US,” it’s pretty likely that this special edition will merely get options that are available elsewhere already:

      – Sport Suspension (Japan)
      – Sunroof (Everywhere but US)
      – Black/Grey interior (Elsewhere, but not in US)

It’s incredibk unlikely that a US Only special edition going to get more range or more powerful motor.

Also live tonight, is Motor Trend’s car of the year (COTY award) live-stream (10:30EST). Who might it be?

  5. Chip says:

    Tom,
Any news from BMW about the i3 battery upgrade in 2016?
Any hint of the Samsung SDI 94Ah cell going into the i3 as an upgrade from the 60Ah cell?

BMW’s CEO Harald Krüger has been quoted as saying there will be a capacity increase for the i3 in 2016. Some EV websites have assumed the 94Ah cell will replace the 60Ah cell in the i3.

In an earlier article about the Frankfurt show, there is a photo of the Samsung display which shows the 60Ah cell next to a 94Ah cell:

    1. No, nothing concrete yet, only what you’ve read here. FWIW, I don’t expect a huge jump n range, I think that will happen with the gen 2 i3 which will likely be in 2018 sometime. I think this will be something like with Nissan is doing with the LEAF now. Something in the order of a 15 % to 20% range boost, but maybe we’ll be surprised.

  6. Chris B says:

This strikes me as the classic “We have to increase interest in the current car which will lag because of the impending introduction of a ‘new and improved model next year” play. You see this all the time with manufacturers as they try to squeeze every last drop out of the “old model”. The i3 is a bit of a problem for BMW because they invested SO MUCH time, money and effort into developing the car (which is revolutionary on several fronts), but ultimately hit the market with “another 80 mile BEV” right before other manufacturers were about the introduce SECOND generation products (i.e. gen 2 Volt – released just 16 months after i3s began to hit the U.S.; Bolt being released late next year; 2016 LEAF with increased range option and higher range expected late next year, etc.) – ouch.

  7. Art Isbell says:

Just received a message from BMW USA. The i3 Shadow Sport is a BEV (i.e., no REx version) with a MSRP of $47,400. It includes the following:

    • Fluid Black exterior
    • Sport-tuned suspension
    • Deka World dark grey interior with blue highlights
    • Moonroof
    • Special limited-edition badge

More at 8 pm EST on Periscope.

  8. Phr3d says:

times sure change – “yeah, but Mine’s got a Moonroof!” isn’t what you expect to hear when discussing super limited editions from Germany.

  9. chris says:

Nooiiooo! I want one (in the UK)

  10. cab says:

I would be a little concerned the sport tuned suspension will make this already somewhat rougher riding short wheelbase car even moreso…

  11. jm says:
