Nissan Sells First 2013 LEAFs In February

Entering February, Nissan was down to only about 350 2012 LEAFs to sell, but thanks to new 2013 inventory slowing trickling out of the 75 mile EV’s Smyrna Tennessee plant, Nissan managed to salvage the back-end of the month and still sell 653 LEAFs in February (earlier reported as over 500 units as a preliminary number).

(UPDATED:  March 1st, 2013 @ 12:02 PM with exact figures…Nissan previously had estimated about 500 LEAFs were sold in February)

Nissan representative Travis Parman, says that all but about 30 of the outgoing 2012 LEAFs have now been sold, meaning as many as 435-odd 2013 LEAFs not only made it to dealerships just under the wire, but into customer’s hands as well.  An estimate confirmed by Mr. Parman, saying the sales mix was “60/40.”

Nissan also notes that, “The pipeline is filling with ‘13s now—the bulk of which are being transported by rail to the West Coast—our largest market for LEAF, which also has the longest transit time.”

It is encouraging to see that the US-made LEAF assembly line has seemingly made a uneventful transition into making production EVs for North America, although Nissan does note it will take a few more weeks until the can match the dealer-level demand for the car.   Once that happens, Nissan “sees LEAF sales rebounding as supply comes on line.”

“We will start to see dealer inventories ramping back up toward the end of March and April.”

Currently, Nissan registers about 300 2013 LEAFs in their national inventory.

The 2013 Nissan LEAF lineup features a new “S Model” trim level that starts at $28,800 (New pricing on trim levels can be found here.  Full lineup details and specs here).

GM needs to add the LED light in the Volt’s charging port too.

Jay, what does the AUTO button do where the finger is pointing?

Does it lock the charger so that no one can unplug it?

    Thx in advance!

    Interesting math, Jay. 350 – 75 is 225 now? 😉

    1. Jay Cole says:

Doesn’t matter now, Nissan just updated their “preliminary numbers” for February and messed up all the math anyway, (=

Here is the new statement on the revised numbers from Nissan’s Corporate Communications director:

“With some help from distribution, LEAF February sales reached 653 leaving about 30 ‘12s in inventory. That put the sales mix at about 60 percent ’13 LEAFs to 40 percent ‘12s as the production ramp-up of LEAF continues at Nissan’s Smyrna, Tenn. facility. “

I had trouble with that calculation too. Turns out Jay outsmarts us and gets it right. The math wiz prevails again.

          Indeed. You win this round!

I didn’t show my work…so I definitely lost marks on that one, (=

  4. Paul says:

How many Leafs were sold in February 2012?

  5. NRGTom says:

478 in february and 579 for next month

I think this february result is impressive. Nissan must have sold lots of cars right at the end of the month.
