Hyundai IONIQ Electric Car Technology Could Filter Into Other Hyundai Automobiles
Hyundai UK product boss Mark Baxter has revealed to Autocar that the technology found in the IONIQ battery-electric may make its way into other Hyundai models in the future.
“We could potentially look at introducing it [IONIQ electric technology] into other bodystyles.”
“C-segment vehicles could be an opportunity to move into, but at this stage nothing has been confirmed.”
Hyundai’s current C-segment vehicle is known as the i30 overseas and the Elantra in the U.S. and Canada.
Baxter was asked whether or not hydrogen fuel cell technology would appear in IONIQ and his response seems to suggest the answer is leaning towards no:
“There is still a place for the hydrogen car; we have the ix35 fuel cell at present and we see a future for that. The challenge is infrastructure.”
“Whether we’ll see it in this [Ioniq] body style, I’m not quite sure at this stage.”
Specifications for the electric IONIQ have not been fully revealed for the U.S. market, but we do know the following:
- One motor, one-clutch setup
- Solid, beveled shield in place of the previous front grille
- Paddle shifters for adjusting 4 levels of regen braking friction
- Fully charged range of 110 miles (in line with what we reported long ago via info from South Korea – on a 29 kWh battery)
- “Eco-routing” system that chooses the best course to preserve battery life and range
- Futuristic mouse-like button pad for shifting the car into gear

Additionally, Autocar has confirmed a few more details for the UK-market IONIQ:
“…there are likely to be two trim levels for the EV and three for both hybrid vehicles. Sat-nav will come as standard in the EV, in part to attempt to alleviate range anxiety by displaying nearby charging points.
“An entry-level, bare-spec model will be omitted because, Hyundai said, its customers have shown they want more equipment. The car will come with a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.”
“There will also be a choice of 15in or 17in wheels for the hybrid, while the EV and plug-in models will get 16s.”
As for the electric IONIQ’s rather conservative styling, Hyundai says that was intentional
“We want to make it fit in with the rest of the range, rather than stand out as something very different.”
The IONIQ electric is expected to launch in the U.S. in August/September of this year. Pricing has not yet been revealed.
