In a post found on The Street, writer Anton Wahlman says he spent a weekend driving in the Silicon Valley neighborhoods “Menlo Park, Atherton, Woodside and similar ZIP codes” and was shocked by the amount of Tesla Model S sedans he discovered.

As Wahlman claims, he found, on average, one Model S per block, with the record for his trip being a block with only 8 houses and an astonishing 5 Model S sedans parked in driveways on that block.

This is certainly not representative of the nation as a whole, but as Wahlman explains, most of Silicon Valley is reserved for the wealthy.  The particular neighborhoods he drove through had home values ranging from $2 to $3 million.  Wealthy individuals typically buy expensive vehicles, which would include the Tesla Model S.

Oh…let’s not forget that Tesla Motors is the hometown automotive hero in Silicon Valley with its headquarters in Palo Alto, California and its factory in nearby Fremont, CA.

What can we conclude from all this?  Well, not much other than the obvious:  Residents of Silicon Valley buy a significant chunk of the Model S’ rolling off the line.  Why?  Because they can afford to and owning an automobile produced right down the block is…umm…nifty.

    Silicon Valley is where sales are most intense, but California as a whole is buying a lot of Tesla’s. User polls have suggested that half of all Model S purchases are happening in California.

    When the Prius came out California was its primary market as well. There might be as many Model S sales in California right now as there were Prius sales in its introductory year. This despite selling for an average of ~$80k each.

    Well it also doesn’t help that Tesla doesn’t have a store in most other parts of the country, or any advertising presence.

      Advertising presence? Yeah, I don’t think Tesla needs to worry about advertising. The day there’s an unsold Tesla gathering dust on a lot somewhere will never come.

    This is what puts Tesla in such a unique spot. The NYTimes, oft-
    heralded as the paper for the wealthy liberal, seems to despise the
    Model S. You see, Elon Musk represents what they loathe – those
    wealthy entrepreneurs who need to pay pay pay more taxes to support
    the poor middle class. Yet liberals, who also coin themselves
    “progressives” buy electric cars to save the planet and free ourselves
    from foreign oil bondage. Republicans, on the other hand seem to have
    their campaign coffers stuffed by Big Oil barons – and constantly trot
    out “experts” to claim electric cars are polluting, impractical beasts
    that nobody wants ( and they just might explode on you and burn
    your home! ). What do Republicans do with the enterprising Mr. Musk
    who sends rocket ships to the ISS and wants private folks to go to Mars?
    They hate that Tesla borrowed federal funds to get started, yet admire
    him for paying them back before their due! What can anyone say
    about Tesla hiring so many unemployed autoworkers back to the line
    in Fremont? Musk embodies what Republicans admire most – good
    ole American brash and ingenuity – a capitalist’s capitalist!

    All in, I’d say the rich, wealthy car buyers in Silicon Valley, New York
    state or wherever, will pave the way for John Q. Middleclass to own
    his Honda/Camry/Fusion-priced 300 mile EV in the soon-to-be future.

    Isn’t that the way it’s supposed to work?
