Freaky Looking SIM-CEL EV Outshines Competition With Laser Powered High Beams (Video)
If you’re in the market for an EV with two seats, far more power than necessary, and a body shaped like this falcon, look no further than the SIM-CEL. The SIM-CEL (short for Cool Energy Link) is the latest wacky EV created by SIM-Drive. This is the third of SIM-Drive’s EV prototypes, whose body of work also includes the unforgettable and completely ridiculous eight-wheeled Eliica.
It should be no surprise based on its shape that the SIM-CEL is extremely aerodynamic, with a drag coefficient of just 0.199. This, combined with an 87-horsepower electric motor in each wheel, helps propel the odd-o-mobile to 62 mph in just over four seconds. That’s what we in the car blogging biz call “fast.”
Power is stored in a 29.6- kWh battery, and with a range of 201 miles based on the Japanese JC-08 Emission Test Cycle, one can almost make an argument that the SIM-CEL is remotely practical. Ah, but for the limited seating.
SIM-Drive employed a space frame chassis and reinforced carbon fiber polymer body to keep the CEL reasonably light. Speaking of light, the high-beams in the SIM-CEL are powered by lasers, and why wouldn’t they be? Then again, half of the fun of driving this peculiar looking specimen would be the quizzical looks on people’s faces as you rolled by in the daylight.
