Ex-GM, Ex-Hyundai, Ex-Nissan Marketing Maven, Joel Ewanick, Takes Over Control Of Fisker Marketing...For A Little While

Three weeks ago we exclusively reported that Fisker Automotive had plans for a third platform to take on General Motors and the Chevrolet Volt/Cadillac ELR, and how this new information seemed to make sense of the curious hiring of the Volt’s Line Chief Tony Posawatz as Fisker CEO earlier this year.

Now it appears Fisker wants GM’s highest profile marketer in their stable too, as the company has hired former General Motor’s marketing boss Joel Ewanick as interim head of global sales.

2009 "Marketer Of The Year"

Mr. Ewanick had been best known as the person most responsible for the dramatic turnaround of Hyundai, that is until he was dismissed for creatively financing a $300 million dollar sponsorship deal with Manchester United that he really didn’t have the spending limit for…t least if you believe his boss.

Mr. Ewanick, 52-year-old replaces Richard Beattie, 58, who announced today that he is retiring from the job as Chief of Global Sales and Marketing.

“We would like to thank Richard for his valuable contribution in helping to grow the Fisker brand and sales in global markets over the past 12 months, and wish him well in his retirement,” Fisker CEO Tony Posawatz said in a statement Automotive News.  “As we seek to appoint a long-term successor, there is no one better than Joel, with his wealth of motor industry experience and knowledge to guide us through this interim period. I am delighted to welcome him to the Fisker team.”

Fisker spokesman Roger Ormisher declined to offer if Mr. Ewanick was a candidate to take over the position full time, but we feel that Mr. Ewanick has a little bit too much automotive rock star in him to be tied down to a smaller start-up company for too long; and that it was his prior relationship with CEO Posawatz that lead to him taking control of the brand messaging of Fisker in these tricky early days of the company’s life.

Can the slogan “Fisker Runs Deep” be that far off?
