Engineering Explained – Video Test Drive Review Of BMW i8
A car that is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, electric and gas?
The BMW i8 is a remarkable innovation in driving. Combined power totals 357 HP and 420 lb-ft torque, yet fuel economy is high at 76 MPGe.
The i8 has a unique approach to how it handles the electric/gas setup, using four different driving modes; eDrive, Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport.
In eDrive, the car uses only the electric engine (housed up front) and the front axle. In this mode it tops out at 75 MPH with a range of 15 miles. As the driver progresses through the modes, electric and gas, or gas-only are engaged, along with power to both axles. The rear axle is solely powered by the turbocharged, 3-cylinder ICE out back.
0-60 in 4.1 seconds with instant Launch Control is fairly impressive, but the most notable downside is price: MSRP As Tested: $150,095.00
Bonus video showing launch control with this video description:
“BMW i8 Launch Control 0-60 Time. Highway pull to determine this vehicle’s 0-60 mph time. The test is done on a slight downhill grade, though I have performed 0-60 tests of some of the vehicles on flat ground and found very similar results, sometimes even better (due to the lack of a slight turn). Unless otherwise noted, most 0-60 launches are performed with traction control off, and the vehicle in sport mode if equipped.”
