Sales of plug-in vehicles in Canada may appear to be rather dismal, but there’s some evidence (only rising Volt sales really) that suggests interest in plug-ins is on the rise among our neighbors to the north.

If we exclude the Nissan LEAF, which was basically without inventory in June, then most of the other plug-ins (excluding the Volt) in Canada sold at levels that are consistent with previous months.

Sales of the Chevy Volt clocked in at 153 units in June, compared to 118 in June 2012.  The YTD total for Volt sales in 2013 now stands at 471 units.

UPDATE:  Mitusbishi only sold 11 of the tiny i-MiEV all electric cars, despite actually inventorying 2013 models(Maybe they should have reconsidered bumping the price by $1,000 though)

Sales for the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid have always been low in Canada and June was no exception to that rule.  Prius Plug-In sales were only 18 units in June.  That amount brings the YTD total to 148.

Finally, we come to the Nissan LEAF.  The 2013 LEAF lands in Canada sometime in July at a much lower price point, so we expect to report a significant uptick in sales next time, but June’s figures are low.  All the LEAFs sold in Canada in June were Model Year 2012 and only 13 were sold.

We suspect potential LEAF buyers are all waiting on the 2013’s arrival.  If we’re right, then next month could be a big one in Canada, at least that’s what we’re hoping for.

    Canada’s cold weather will keep consumers from choosing a full EV, where cold temperatures mean poor battery charging, capacity and range. Especially those without thermal battery temperature management like the Leaf, which will be most susceptible to all three.

    Plug-in hybrids will continue to be the electrified vehicle of choice, and the Volt, with it’s thermal battery management system will lead the way.

    I wonder how many Focus Electric, C-MAX and Fusion Energi models Ford sold in Canada for June and YTD?

    FYI…..The iMiEV sold just 22 units for June after it’s price drop, and 81 YTD

      Well, if you live in the greater Vancouver area, you’ll have roughly the same climate as I have in Amsterdam, which is nearly perfect for ev’s. It’s not freezing to hard in winter and hardly gets very warm neither. Of course it’s different in Winnipeg or Edmonton, but you’ re not freezing your ***** off in the entire country:-)

      Vancouver, BC has almost the same climate as Seattle & Portland, where Leaf is the largest selling Nissan model.

      The reason why Leaf sales are low in Canada, I think, have to do with the price.

      1. And – a slow to respond BC EV Charging Infrastructure – very little press on the growth of that, as well as – the restricted rebates time frame!

        Very few people here about the 19,000 EV chargers listed on http://www.plugshare.com – I’m sure! Or about the App that lets you keep track of the activity and total Tally!

    The fact that 2013 Leafs are just now making their way to Canada supports the theory that Nissan has had problems ramping up production in Smyrna. If that is true and is now being cleared up then we should see sales of the LEAF really take off here in the US.

    My wife and I were one of those 13 buyers last month. We were going to wait for the 2013 model but were disappointed that Nissan changed the factory installed options for Canada. Having a backup camera was really important to us and we didn’t want to have to pay for the SL model just to get it. The 2013 SV with the Technology Package would have been a nice car for us if that package was available in Canada.

    Ended up paying only $25k (before tax) for the car after factory/dealer discounts and Ontario taxpayer subsidy. I really like the changes that Nissan made to the 2013 model but for now I’m happy with the extra money in my pocket.

      I too live in a cold climate, but I believe the Leaf’s battery survives better in extremely cold than extremely hot
