Cadillac ELR is First Caddy Plug-In…More to Come

In an exclusive interview with The Detroit Bureau, Cadillac global sales boss Bob Ferguson revealed that the ELR is only the beginning for plug-ins with a Cadillac badge.

Ferguson told The Detroit Bureau that Cadillac is already giving strong consideration to adding future plug-ins to it lineup.  Ferguson hinted that the next plug-in Caddy could be even more upscale and larger in size then the relatively compact ELR.

Quoting Ferguson:

“I could certainly see a larger vehicle, something even more luxurious.”

Why more plug-ins?

As Ferguson says, the plug-in Caddys, packed with technology, could appeal to a swath of buyers both in the US and overseas that the Cadillac badge, in general, doesn’t appeal to now.

Ferguson offered few specifics on future Cadillac plug-ins, but he did say this in relation to the ELR:

“I’m so optimistic about how well [Cadillac ELR] will do, especially on the West Coast and in the Northeast.  It will bring us a lot of new customers, I’m sure.  We’re bullish on this technology.  This will lead to a progression of [plug in] cars for Cadillac.”

There are no details at this point in time on the future plug-in Caddy.  However, we do know that Cadillac has a habit of transforming concepts into production vehicles in near-record times.  So, if we see a plug-in Caddy concept hit the stage, it won’t take long for Cadillac to turn it into a launch-ready vehicle.  That is, if Cadillac green lights it.

    I wonder, just wonder, if this is the “something big” to be introduced at LA auto show this month.

    I wouldn’t put it past Cadillac to have a new plug-in SRX or Esclade ready.

    Bring on that Tesla fighter GM. You could do it if you wanted too. All you are lacking is a light weight body in aluminum or CF. Oh wait maybe corvette weight saving tech would work?

      If the ELR were priced at least $15,000 cheaper, I could see it stealing a lot of business from Tesla.

        If GM came out with a BEV Cadillac-E, that had performance #’s similar to Tesla, better luxury, CUE system, SAE DC quickcharge, built in wireless charging, and priced at 85K out the door, they would have a serious Model S fighter.

          Meant to say, base it off the CTS-V, but call it the CTS-E. Just as a starting point for style. I’d rather they have a purpose built chassis.

    Right now the EV market is lacking 3 products:

    1). Full Sized (aka 1970’s) Luxury car (4 people in the backseat).

    2). Pickup trucks and Vans. (See the related Via Article, so supposedly this is temporary).

    3). Family sized sport utility vehicle that many American Families Need.

    Cadillac could address at least 2 of these 3, and certainly it wouldn’t be a stretch for GM to release their already designed Crossvolt.

      No one needs a Suv, it is covenant and comfortable. The word “need” is all to often confused and missed used as another word for want. Many don’t know the difference. And is widely miss used in the auto world.

        The words can get tricky. For a family that wants to reduce the use of gas but still wants to take a family vacation, they need a plug-in SUV. To meet their wants, they have needs. That is how it gets mixed up. The English language does not have a plethora of wants and needs words to describe the scale of wants and needs.
