Ford Mondeo Energi PHEV

Two of the most popular plug-in hybrids in the U.S. (in 2016) – the Chevrolet Volt and Ford Fusion Energi made their debutsĀ at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show…under slightly different names and shells.

General Motors has decided to introduce the Chevrolet Volt in China as the Buick Velite 5, while Ford only slightly renamed theĀ Fusion Energi to Mondeo Energi (the Mondeo name is also used in Europe, where plug-in version isn’t currently offered).

For Buick, it’s the first plug-in model after nearly 20 years, and 8 million cars sold in China.

On the technical side, both cars are identical to North American cousins.

Production of Buick Velite 5 and Ford Fusion Energi is localized in China.

How come China gets to mandate all these rules for incentives on EVs forcing production to be in their country, but if the US talks about any similar kind of action for our economy China cries foul?

    1. Sch says:

China is not considered a market based economy by WTO. Thanks to that you can target tariffs and other protection measures against China, and the WTO would not say anything.
But countries that are in the category of market based economy, should behave differently than China. In exchange for that WTO oversees fairness of others rules against them.

I’m sure North Korea mandates their own incentives…

The difference is, China is the largest market in the world, so if you want to sell vehicles you have to play by there rules…

We received a more attractive and higher luxury badged vehicle out of it…

    Does it get power seats?
