According to recent press release from Bosch, the electric Fiat 500 (like the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive) uses Bosch’s SMG motor, which is a permanent magnet synchronous type.

The SMG 180/120 is described as a compact powerhouse for use in electrical powertrains with up to 80 kW, up to 200 Nm of torque (148 pound-feet) and over 90 percent efficiency.

With a size of only 120 mm long, 180 mm diameter and weight of just 32 kg (70.5 lb), the SMG 180/120 should fit into any electric vehicle.

Joachim Fetzer, who is in charge of electric vehicle and hybrid systems at Bosch, stated:

“The SMG 180/120 is the Bosch all-around solution for electromobility. It accelerates quickly over the first few meters and can be installed in electric vehicles as well as hybrids.”

Maximum speed is incredibly high at 12,800 revolutions per minute. In hybrid applications, the SMG 180 includes a start-stop function and regenerative braking.

The question is, who will be next to use Bosch’s SMG motors?

The real question is, when will they return from the recall?

  2. Spec says:

OK, Bosch, now convince Fiat to build more of them and sell the car everywhere.
