The launch of the electric Bluebird DC-50 has been pushed back to July 2014 and production is now limited to only 50 units.

Bluebird says that the two-door electric coupe will come in two versions, with one capable of spitting out 360 hp.

A lower hp version will be offered and this one is claimed to have a range of up to 200 miles (NEDC).

Bluebird insists that the DC-50 is strictly a niche offering and at 50 units, niche is an understatement.

In speaking with Autocar, Bluebird Speed Records project director, Martin Rees, stated:

“In terms of the customers we envision that 60 percent will be collectors, 20 percent will be users and 20 percent will be for the high performance derivative”.

“This is not Bluebird trying to enter mainstream automotive manufacturing.”

“Our operation is a very intimate, very direct opportunity to celebrate a great man. For that reason we don’t need PR or marketing, our story writes itself. Just by releasing it we know it will sell.”

“This is being done for a special reason and to celebrate a significant part of the Bluebird story. If that proves that the brand can be expanded into this market then that’s something we will look at. We would have to look seriously at taking this forward into the future, with this technology and with the design qualities that we hope we could bring. Fundamentally Bluebird is about pushing technology boundaries.”

At this time, there’s no pricing info available on the Bluebird DC-50, but given it limited production status and performance-oriented design, we’d guess it’ll cost even more than a Tesla Roadster, itself an iconic electric vehicle now.
