Recently, Kia proudly announced that for the very first time it began series production of an electric vehicle for export.

Kia’s first model to be marketed outside of South Korea is the 2015 Soul EV, which in some way is the second generation of Kia EVs, because the first was the Kia Ray EV (available on a limited scale only in Korea).

Soul EVs designated for Europe and U.S. should land somewhere in second half of the year, but don’t expect too much as annual output is planned to reach just 5,000 units.

Here are a bunch of photos from the production line and an interesting video from the process inside Kia’s Gwangju facility in Korea.

  1. Disappointing production numbers, but hopefully the presence of this EV at Kia dealerships will help to raise awareness of vehicle electrification.

The inclusion of CHAdeMO quick charge is encouraging.

    1. Suprise Cat says:

But you can see, that battery installation system is fully automated, so it’s already designed for much higher production numbers.

      1. Ocean Railroader says:

It could be that they are going to build 5000 over the first run of the car before they release a improved version of it. Or they could be saying they are going to build 5000 to test out all the bugs in building such a large number of EV’s for a company that has not built a main stream EV. What could really happen is they build the 5000 EV’s over the next six months and then next year they build 10,000 to 20,000 as they go more main steam.

This car though could sell more then the Chevy Spark and the Ford Electric in the same amount of time.

  2. Big Solar says:

Are these gonna be sold on the west coast only?

    1. Jay Cole says:

      Hey BS,

Here is the current verbage from Kia on the US rollout:

“The Soul EV will initially be sold in California and Oregon in the West and several Eastern states including New York, New Jersey and Maryland, the regions with the largest EV markets and infrastructure. KMA will look to offer the vehicle in other markets in the near future as infrastructure and demand grow. Pricing for the Soul EV will be announced closer to the vehicle’s launch.”

      1. I hope they sell them in Massachusetts, too. We are supposed to be getting a $2,500 instant rebate this summer-ish.

I am looking forward to hearing about actual real world range, and whether it has direct heating defroster, etc.

  3. David Murray says:

Nice.. The battery pack looks more similar to the Leaf’s battery pack than other cars I’ve seen.

    1. Suprise Cat says:

Well, it’s a black painted flat metal box…and the seat and foot room configuration is very similar in every car…

  4. Brandon says:

i wonder when another nice looking EV will be made…

  5. Ryan says:

It will sell really well if they don’t price it too high.

    1. kdawg says:

      I bet it doesn’t sell more than 5000 :)

  6. Ken_3 says:

Waiting to see real world milage also. And price point. It could be my next car.
