AeroVironment’s portable TurboCord Dual was listed among the 2016 Automotive News PACE Awards Finalists (winners will be announced April 11).

AeroVironment is the preferred charging solution supplier for seven global automakers. The TurboCord specifically is included in every Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid sold in the U.S., so it qualifies for the the Premier Automotive Suppliers’ Contribution to Excellence Award.

“Only suppliers with a production commitment from an automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) qualify for PACE Award consideration. Volvo selected AeroVironment’s TurboCord Dual earlier this year to be included as standard equipment in the 2016 Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid.”

“The Automotive News PACE awards program, now in its 22nd year, honors suppliers’ innovations in products, information technology, manufacturing processes and capital equipment. Recognized around the world as a benchmark for innovation, the awards are regarded as the Oscars of the automotive components industry, and are awarded to technologies that offer superior innovation, technological achievement and business performance among automotive suppliers.”

TurboCord Dual enables you to charge a car at 16 A from 240/120 V, which is a good feature to have just in case, but its $599 price makes it rather expensive, especially considering the max abilities on L2 (3.3 kW)

Ken Karklin, general manager, efficient energy systems for AeroVironment said:

“More plug-in drivers are choosing TurboCord Dual for its convenience and versatility, and with its selection by Volvo and nomination for the PACE Award there is even more evidence that TurboCord Dual is making an impact. TurboCord Dual is a remarkably flexible and powerful portable charging solution, and is setting a new standard for fast, dependable EV charging that is both convenient and easy for drivers.”

  1. SparkEV says:

Chevy should’ve given out TurborCord with SparkEV instead of L1 + Bosche L2. L1 is selling for about $300, Bosche for $500, so Chevy would’ve saved $200 by giving out TurboCord instead.

FYI, SparkEV used to include $500 rebate for Bosche L2, not sure if they still have the promo.

I bought one because it fits in the Leaf door pocket, I have a 6-20 240V outlet at work so it’s very convenient.

I need a good outside charging station, that deals with rain and snow.

    Anyone have any ideas?

I like Clipper Creek. It seems very reliable. For outdoor installs it would require hardwiring.

You can ask them questions and I have had all my emails answered.

    2. John says:

I’d second the recommendation for Clipper Creek, hardwired. I have one and they are great. Tough and durable, particularly the enclosure. Also, I think they sell a holster for the J plug that has a hood/cover to keep off snow and rain.

    3. KenZ says:

Third on Clipper Creek. Ours had an issue with the connector itself after two years (still in warranty), and they gave me the BEST service ever. They guy sent me a replacement overnight immediately before I had to send ours back, then they paid for the shipping return, we got to keep the new one, and they checked in on us to make sure it was working fine. Simply put: that level of customer service (for a part over which they have no control; they buy the connectors) has made me a Clipper Creek customer for life. We’ll be buying our second when our second EV comes in a few months.

    4. Victoria says:

All ClipperCreek charging stations have rugged, fully sealed Nema 4 enclosures for installation anywhere.

Well its a bit pricey, but the neat thing is how compact it is. Perfect complement for the 120 volt ‘charging cord’ included with vehicles.

I finally talked my dentist into purchasing a 2015 new Volt. He has a 60 mile round trip commute to his office, so he had an electrician install a 20 amp outlet on the building near his parking spot. Since you get 35-38 miles in good weather on the volt, the 30 mile trip each way requires charging to make the trip home electrically. Sometimes he only works 1/2 a day so 4 hour charging is ideal, and fortunately, the outlet is 240 not 200, so he gets the full 3.3 kw rate.

He just has the 240 only Turbocord, which isn’t too pricey, and of course, he can afford it. At home, he merely plugs into an existing 120 volt outlet in the garage, using the GM provided standard cord, since it has all night to recoop.

The nice thing about the turbocord is it is so TINY… Much easier to use than even the standard huge 120 volt standard unit. The whole thing fits underneath the rainproof lip of the office outlet, and the cord is so tiny it coils up to almost nothing when removed… But its plenty for the 2015 volt’s 15 amp requirement.

It’s a great product, very light and compact. The flexibility of the J cable is great too.

For a lot of people 16A charging would be enough to get them to full overnight (at home?). Nissan had part of the equation correct for the early LEAFs.

UL listed and backed by a real company. Much better product than non-UL listed EVSEs in aluminum cans built in garages (unless it’s an OpenEVSE from your own garage).

  6. franky_b says:

I have it, I use it, I love it. Why? It’s compact and light and it does the job. It replaced my EVSE in my car.

I use it indoor, outdoor, in the rain and in the cold.

Charge my i3 from 0-100% in 7 hrs.

  7. Get Real says:

I would consider this if they ever upgraded this to 6.6kw. I know it would make it heavier and more expensive but I think that would be a good trade-off for a pretty compact all in one L1/L2 solution.
